Letter: Kudos to Morse Enterprises

It has come to our attention that some citizens of Mathews question the need to contribute to the saving of the L.M. Callis house for a corporation that will earn a profit from the operation of this building once it is restored.

The saving of the L.M. Callis house from demolition is a wonderful step in the creation of a Downtown Mathews Historic District and a blessing to the citizens of Mathews County. We cannot have an historic district while tearing down historic buildings within that area!

The Bay School is a nonprofit corporation and paid no county real estate taxes on the L.M. Callis house; Morse Enterprises is not. Therefore, this property has been returned to the tax rolls. Once the property is renovated by Morse Enterprises, it will serve Mathews citizens and visitors. Everybody wins.

Now we need to repay the loan that made this move possible. Tax-free donations may be made to: Preservation Mathews at P.O. Box 1007, Mathews, Va. 23109.
