Letter: Keeping our religious freedom intact

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

A little more than a year ago, the Middlesex County Board of Supervisors received a letter from an attorney stating that Middlesex would be sued if they continued saying a prayer at the start of their meetings. The attorney is part of an organization, Freedom from Religion, based in Wisconsin, and that is what they’ve been doing all across this country.

The board stopped saying prayers immediately.

At the next monthly meeting, a group of citizens welcomed a minister from another county who gave a prayer in front of the historic Middlesex courthouse where the board meets.

Over the next year, not a single minister in Middlesex did the same. Not one minister during public comment, at the opening of the meetings, had anything to say to the board, not even to offer a prayer.
