Letter: Jim Crow is reborn

Editor, Gazette-Journal: Justice Samuel Alito said: “Because of the Voting Rights Act, Black voter turnout now rivals that of White voters.” Therefore, he reasoned, the Voting Rights Act was no longer needed. He failed to see the irony of his position. The Voting Rights Act put teeth into the 13th, 14th and especially the 15th Amendments. Following the Supreme Court’s recent gutting of the last vestige of the VRA, the southern states previously constrained by the VRA began to eliminate the districts that sent people of color to Congress. It is estimated that at least 20 legislators of color will be gerrymandered out of office. It seems apparent that racism is alive and well at least in these states.
