Letter: It’s time to step up

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

It’s quite a contradiction that at July 4th celebrations this year, parents of Gloucester County awaited news from a court as to whether bathrooms at public schools must be provided in accordance with court edicts favoring transgender students. Unless you’re stuck in an urban dictionary app, you likely know of what I write. Feelings are trumping reality. Errancy seems to be everywhere. 

Why is school important, or better yet, what do we mean when we say “an educated citizenry?” Many people emphasize “knowing how to think and reason” among the goals of a curriculum. Others aim at “the good and the true.” Most all of the schooling I received celebrated the wisdom of western civilization and was anchored in Christian moral tradition—and they were public schools. But times have changed. Maybe you’ve noticed the Christmas break is called a winter break.
