Letter: It is all about fairness

Editor, Gazette-Journal: The April 21 referendum to allow for temporary redistricting of Virginia’s congressional districts is being attacked as unfair. Actually, it is all about fairness. The Republicans are worried about losing their narrow majority in the U.S. House of Representatives in the November 2026 election. So the Texas, North Carolina, Missouri, and Florida (in process) legislatures (under pressure from President Trump) redrew their congressional districts to be able to elect more Republicans. In response, California amended its constitution by popular vote to redistrict in mid-decade in order to elect more Democrats to help offset the new Republican seats. If passed, the April 21 referendum in Virginia will do the same thing. The voters of Virginia spoke in last year’s election. Like it or not, Virginia is a Democratic state. We elected three Democrats to statewide office and Democrats hold a 2-1 majority in the Virginia House of Delegates. We want our elected officials to...
