Letter: Islander decision puts flood insurance in jeopardy

I would like to bring a matter of critical importance to the homeowners and real estate agents in Mathews County. Let me first say how wonderful it would be to have the Islander returned to its Mid-Century Modern style. The board should continue to act to get the Islander restored.

It is of critical importance that the county abide by the regulations to stay in the federal Flood Insurance Program. Unfortunately, the vote to issue a permit should not have happened yet. The board jumped over several required steps. First, the historic designation of the Islander has not been completely approved by the state. When it is complete, the Islander must make a new application for an exception to the flood ordinance; after it is approved, then the board can vote to approve the permit.
