Letter: Invitation accepted; mind unchanged

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

So, I answered the invitation provided in the Gazette-Journal (March 5, 2015), and met with YMCA official Dick Phillips (Capital Campaign Chairman) and branch director Sheila Pillath last Thursday.

It was a very cordial get-together where they presented the overall project including architectural renditions and peripheral plans for the new development with the idea of informing me of the total undertaking. When it was my turn to “ask any questions I might have” my answer was simply, “I am in favor of the Mathews YMCA’s new facility project. I had been a “Y” member as a youngster (a long, long time ago) and have great regard for the work the YMCA does. However, with what I still do not agree is the county contribution of $300,000 to a business entity, notwithstanding the business’s charitable (501c3) status.”

After our affable conversation, I believe I clarified my position that it is not the role of the county ...
