Letter: HITW situation should never have occurred

Editor, Gazette-Journal: Personal vendetta political decision-making has interfered with sound fiscal management in Mathews County, and taxpayers are paying the price. The “Hole in the Wall Situation” should never have occurred, yet it has consumed significant staff time and public resources that could have been better spent improving revenues or reducing costs. As a retired commercial and industrial real estate broker with over 40 years of experience and more than 1,000 leases negotiated, I reviewed this matter firsthand, meeting with county officials, speaking with the tenant, and listening to public input. Despite political promises never to sell the property, this must be a business decision, not an emotional or political one. Put an end to this now and focus on our future. If the county retains ownership, allows the lease to continue, and proceeds with litigation, taxpayers could face losses approaching $17 million, including legal fees, pump-out costs, and potential lawsuit expos...
