Letter: Historic courthouse not a good venue

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I am writing to express my appreciation for the Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ desire and intention to be transparent and inclusive as you fulfill your duties for the citizens of Mathews County. I believe you are on the right track with your intentions. However, I see a big obstacle to your attaining your objective and it involves the board’s meeting space.

Our historic courthouse is quaint, charming, and full of history. However, it is not conducive to being full of people. There is limited seating. The aisles are cramped and not easily accessible for people in wheelchairs or those who use walkers and canes. When the seats are filled, and there is standing room only, those of us who are getting older cannot tolerate standing in one place for a lengthy time period.

Given these constraints, which will not encourage people to attend Board of Supervisors’ meetings, I urge you all to find an alternative meeting place. The space needs to be roomy and...
