Good news is difficult to find these days. Therefore, the fact that Food Lion in little Mathews is ranked No. 1 in the Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters Miracle Network fundraising campaign is uplifting! Mathews is ranked No. 1 in the Williamsburg region of 24 Food Lion stores—and ranked No. 6 of the 1,113 Food Lion store chain.

Jill Falzone, the customer services manager, attributes the success to “the people” and the enthusiasm of the store’s employees in embracing this fundraising effort. Times are difficult economically. But “been-heres,” “come-heres” and weekenders donated a total of $5,762.37 by rounding off to the next dollar on purchases, or donated $1 for either a bracelet or a balloon to benefit the Children’s Hospital in Norfolk between April 30 and May 27. The final tally will be made public next week, and Mathews may well move up in ranking nationally.
