Editorial: Give ’em the business

We are also now observing National Small Business Week, a week dedicated to supporting small businesses.

We can cite a litany of facts and figures about the importance of small businesses to our economy—how small businesses provide employment for 47.3 percent of America’s workforce; how small businesses have accounted for two out of every three jobs added in the past 25 years; how 82 percent of small businesses provide on-the-job training for their employees; etc.

But everybody already knows all that. Small businesses provide so much more than mere numbers on a ledger sheet. They are the heart and soul of every community.

With scant resources, they have been hard hit by the recent pandemic. While the Payroll Protection Plan has been a godsend to some businesses struggling through these trying times, when their doors had to close and business dried up, they had little else to fall back on.
