Letter: For Thanksgiving Day

Why is Thanksgiving such a special day?

Is one brief day per year sufficient time

To recollect the blessings we receive?

Why is the fullness of a day observed

For thankfulness so seldom on display?

In truth it seems hypocrisy unmasked

To celebrate abundance we believe

Our due. Our grateful founders were inspired

To mark their first year’s harvest with a feast,

For they had conquered famine and despair.

Their hopes for new beginnings now increased.

They dreamed of freedom’s promise they would share.

Today the endless bounty we possess

Demands each day be one for thankfulness.
