Letter: For-profit health care system failing Americans

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

I am a member of Physicians for a National Health Program (www.pnhp.org). It is impossible to deliver to Americans the level and benefits of modern medicine in a delivery system that puts share profits first.

The nation would greatly benefit both in health and dollar gains if preventative care and timely continuity of care were the goals under a single-payer program. This is where we were headed in the late ’60s and early ’70s. Under the for-profit insurance system, we give money to CEOs to delay and deny us care. And on top of that, modern medical technology was largely paid for via our universities and National Institutes of Health using our tax dollars.

Thousands of Americans suffer in poor health and are dying prematurely because of the present for-profit system. We can do better.
