Letter: Fond memories of Mathews

I thought moving April 10th was hard. Coming back again for my haircut at Country Cuts on Friday opened up the “flood gates” to all my wonderful memories of my years in Mathews County go forward so quickly, like a butterfly, flutter away.

If someone asks me now where I am from, I say Mathews … I moved there in 1973. I was born and grew up in York County. Now I no longer say that because Mathews is where I lived the longest and will always be my home. I have always lived in the country on a farm. Tears bounce around on my cheeks; it is so hard to realize my beloved Bellefield is in someone else’s tender care. Please welcome the new family. Bellefield was built by the Hudgins family in 1871. Daddy wanted it to look like a Colonial Williamsburg house, so the two-story brick part is old. It was stripped to the floor joists and sills, and all the framing stayed; it was built so well.
