Letter: Flag should be illuminated at night

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

While enjoying little league baseball games this spring, I noted an American flag flying adjacent to the fields. It is heartwarming to see the flag over the fields as a reminder to all that we live in a free country, that many serve today to protect our freedoms, and countless others have given their lives in service to others.

Yet the flag is flown nightly in the dark. Federal Flag Code states: "The flag should be lighted at all times, either by sunlight or by an appropriate light source." The ball fields have lights. Mathews has many civic-minded and patriotic organizations, citizens and tradesmen. Couldn’t resources be pooled to secure a floodlight and get it wired to the existing lighting so the flag is illuminated at all times? If not illuminated at night, the flag should be retired at sunset.
