Letter: Fiscal responsibility?

I find it interesting that the current Congress touts fiscal responsibility while proposing a tax budget that will increase the deficit by $1.5 trillion. That doesn’t seem like fiscal responsibility to me. One of my many concerns is the proposal to cut $1 trillion from the Medicaid budget.

While those of us who don’t receive Medicaid funding may dismiss this, I would challenge this thinking. The current legislature in Richmond has vowed to never expand Medicaid in Virginia as long as the Republicans are in control. Since we already have 3,000 local citizens currently without health insurance, with this proposal that number will surely increase significantly.

In addition, there’s another concern that may not be so obvious. How many folks have someone they know, either a family member or friend, who is in a nursing home? Many of the patients are covered through Medicaid. If this reduction in Medicaid stays, where will these patients go and wh...
