Letter: Every vote counts

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

The Mathews County Electoral Board would like to thank all of our Officers of Election for the excellent job they performed during the recent November election. While we had difficulties in one precinct because of a machine malfunction, the Officers of Election took all the right steps needed as required by state code.

This election was a new challenge as Mathews had never had an official declared write-in candidate, causing some procedural confusion for our voters. Our Officers of Election were present to offer them assistance as needed and allowed. In future elections, the board will continue to work with all the citizens to make the voting procedure easier to understand.

Mathews had over 51 percent of its citizens voting. They voted for Governor—Cuccinelli 59 percent over McAuliffe 34.8 percent and Sarvis 3.5 percent; Lt. Governor—Jackson 50.69 percent over Northam 49.24 percent; Attorney General—Obenshain 60.59 percent over Herring...
