Letter: Drug problem is complex

In his letter (“More thoughts,” Sept. 29 Readers Write), Richard M. Hicks blames President Biden for “fentanyl, lots of fentanyl.” Perhaps he has forgotten that fentanyl, cocaine and marijuana have been crossing our southern border for years and years before President Biden ever took office.

At one time, China was sending fentanyl to America via the U.S. Postal Service. When that became difficult, China began sending precursor chemicals to Mexican cartels that completed the formulation, then forwarded the finished product to America. America uses more illicit drugs than any other country in the world because Americans love recreational drugs.

It is assumed that immigrants are the major source of fentanyl and other opiates; however, those opiates actually enter via trucks and U.S. citizens through legal ports of entry.
