Editor, Gazette-Journal:
I wish to bring to your attention some very disturbing circumstances around the Mathews War Memorial and possible deeding of the land to Confederate groups.
A June 10 email from supervisor Mike Walls clearly indicates that a survey was conducted—officially or unofficially. The board failed to disclose the fact of this survey in the subsequent meeting or any time thereafter. This intentional decision to keep this information from the public demonstrates an utter lack of transparency by the board.
Furthermore, one of the supervisors is a member of one of the Confederate groups interested in the property deed. That is an inherent conflict of interest. At the very least, this individual must be recused from any decision making concerning deeding this land. Absent that, there can be no conclusion that any process is legal, fair, transparent or conflict-free.
