Letter: Democratic Socialism: Maligned and misunderstood

Democratic Socialism, the most misunderstood words in some people’s minds: America has had Democratic Socialism in it for many, many years.

We hear the word “socialism” and immediately think of communism. Socialism is taxpayer funds being used collectively to benefit society as a whole, despite income, contribution or ability. We have about 75 ways Democratic Socialism has improved the lives of Americans.

Think of public schools and libraries, state and national parks, the National Institutes of Health, landfills for our garbage, FAA, roads, bridges and all of our infrastructure, military who protect our country, fire departments, police, the National Guard, all those in Congress and in public works, the presidency, our court system, our prisons … the list goes on and on.
