Editor, Gazette-Journal: There will be an amendment to the Virginia Constitution on the ballot this November called the “Reproductive Freedom Act.” It’s about allowing minors to make their own reproductive decisions and it’s about making abortion a right under the Virginia Constitution. The drafters start by saying “that every individual has the fundamental right to reproductive freedom.” It makes no exceptions for minors and makes no mention of parental rights. The constitution is superior to any other state law. The drafters of the amendment went on to quietly insert the following language. “The Commonwealth shall not penalize, prosecute, or otherwise take adverse action against any individual for aiding or assisting another individual in exercising such other individual’s right to reproductive freedom with such other individual’s voluntary consent.” That sounds reasonable until you know why it was inserted.
