Letter: Courting a crisis

Editor, Gazette-Journal: It has become a truism that once a government spending program is established, it becomes permanent. Taxes are never revised downward. As was demonstrated with the recent government shutdown, 40% of Americans relied on some form of government assistance and were unable to provide for themselves. Meanwhile the country witnessed inflation exceeding 4%. Currently the government spent over $7 trillion during fiscal year 2025 which represents over $20,000 per citizen. Unfortunately, the exorbitant spending is not limited to the U.S. government alone. The entire world is infected with the exorbitant spending malady. Global debt has reached 326% of global GDP. In January of 2025, failed policies coupled with the exorbitant spending have resulted in the current sovereign debt crisis.
