In response to Mr. Mehaffey’s letter (“Adapting to changing demographics,” March 12 Readers Write), I must say that I agree with his assessment that the politics of division are getting us nowhere. In my opinion, the media should be ashamed for its biased, irresponsible reporting that furthers political and demographic division. I disagree, however, that we need to change our system of government to adapt to changing demographics.

Our Constitution provides the protection of all demographic groups. The First Amendment ensures freedom of speech and religion for all Americans, regardless of race, creed or sex. The same is true of the remaining nine amendments in the Bill of Rights. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 reinforces antidiscrimination. The Constitution is already unbiased.
