Letter: Conservancy’s criticism is misplaced

Our local officials use a review/approval process designed to safeguard the county and its residents, especially when such review/approval is contingent on receipt of required documents and prior approvals from other governmental agencies. That process should not be subverted.

The Feb. 26 edition of the Gazette-Journal reported Mr. Jim Smith of the Mathews County Land Conservancy (MLC) treated the Mathews County Board of Supervisors to criticism of county staff during its Feb. 24 monthly meeting. Mr. Smith claimed, “…plans for building a boathouse at Williams Wharf are being held up because of siting issues that need to be resolved.” Smith went on to accuse County Building Official Jamie Wilks of saying “the building couldn’t be placed at the designated site.” Wilks responded, “…the conservancy’s own engineer had told him there was a problem with siting the building because it didn’t meet the state...
