Letter: Concerns expressed over new proposed tax

I am a homeowner in Mobjack and recently acquired property that I rent out on a part-time basis through the Mathews Visitor Center and online rental agencies including AirBnB and HomeAway. 

Mathews County’s proposed transient occupancy tax ordinance will increase my costs and have a negative impact on my ability to attract short-term renters to the county. These out-of-area renters help support the local economy by frequenting Mathews County local restaurants, grocery stores and retail businesses.

My first comment focuses on the justification for this new tax.   What is the justification for this new tax and are projected revenues included in the proposed FY 2019 budget?  Has the county considered the potential negative impacts to short-term renters and potential loss of revenue if renters decide to take their business elsewhere to other counties?
