Letter: Claim about remedial classes challenged

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

We take exception to many of Mr. Larson’s assertions in his recent letter to the editor ("What does ‘repurposing’ really mean?" Aug. 30 Readers Write). Specifically, we challenge his statement that "… William and Mary must offer remedial writing and math to incoming students." This is simply not true; William and Mary has not found it necessary to offer remedial classes in any subject area to any students.

Also, although findings on the effectiveness of the Head Start program have been mixed, the recent Congressional study referred to by Mr. Larson did not brand the program useless. In fact, the report showed consistent small to moderate advantages, in particular, for 3-year-old children.
