Letter: Civil unrest

Under current law, anyone who is convicted of assaulting a law enforcement officer is guilty of a Class 6 felony and is subject to a mandatory minimum term of confinement of six months. Virginia Senate Democrats have published a measure to downgrade the charge of assault on law enforcement officers (LEOs) to a misdemeanor, the equivalent of a slap on their hand.

This is just one of many proposals that are designed to reform Virginia’s police and criminal justice systems, leaving our LEOs vulnerable to injury without any accountability to the perpetrator and to reduce the LEOs’ ability to do their job of protecting us.
