Letter: Choosing charity over fear

This is in follow-up to my letter of Nov. 26 and to Mr. King’s response to same on Dec. 3. I appreciate Mr. King’s query about my sources, which are as follows: The Guardian (“Syrian Refugees in America: Separating Fact from Fiction in the Debate,” Nov. 19, 2015); U.S. Department of State (Special Briefing, November, 2015). Mr. King also questions the origin of my quote about our Board of Supervisors (BOS) wishing to “make it tougher for Syrian refugees to locate here.” As I say in my letter, I am quoting the Gazette-Journal’s Nov. 19 report on the BOS action.

The Gloucester Board of Supervisors does not have the authority to prevent refugees from resettling in our county (the settlement of refugees is governed by federal law). This was part of my point about their acting in “ignorance.” My larger concern is that the BOS doesn’t seem to realize the fact that most Syrians fleeing their country are civ...
