Letter: Back the Blue year-round

An unknown writer once penned, “A society which chooses war against the police better learn to make peace with its criminals.” In 1962, John F. Kennedy made May 15 a special day by proclaiming it as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week in which that date falls as Police Week.

This year in Washington, D.C., tens of thousands of law enforcement officers participated in planned events such as a candlelight vigil at the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial to honor the 619 fallen officers whose names were just added to the walls, and a Back the Blue Bike Tour which began at the U.S. Capitol and ended at the memorial. At the bike tour press conference, Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) announced, “America must back the blue all year round.”
