Letter: Appreciates Wilson’s op-ed

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

A most sincere thank you to Alexander Wilson for his outstanding op-ed article in the Dec. 16 issue of the Gazette-Journal. I am a Mathews “come-here,” originally from the far West and a Southerner only by virtue of the USAF and the location of family, so I am most appreciative of the well-documented history of slavery Mr. Wilson provided.

Slavery and segregation are an historical fact and should be the backdrop for us to move forward through dialog and love to heal this aspect of divisiveness that grips America. As Mr. Wilson expressed it, we don’t have to agree on everything, but we can listen and, I would add, with open minds and open hearts. I am always taken back to Christ’s words: “Love one another as I have loved you.” Words that apply universally regardless of your religious belief.

Thanks again, Mr. Wilson. I’m adding you to my list of heroes and I hope we get to meet one of these days.
