Editor, Gazette-Journal: On Monday, Nov. 1, about 65 good southern Christian men and women met at the base of the southern war memorial in Mathews Court House to hold a prayer vigil to pray that the war memorial would be left where it is. Commander Joey Taylor of Sons of Confederate Veterans Lane-Armistead Camp #1772 spoke to those gathered and told them of the importance of keeping this war memorial where it stands. Our southern heritage, families, and war dead have been under attack for years and we must fight until we win to keep our ancestors’ bravery and honor. David Callis gave an elegant speech on what the war memorial means to him and his family. As a native born-here, this war memorial stood for the men who pick up arms to fight an army that invaded the sovereign state of the Old Dominion to start the Northern War of Aggression.
