Letter: Americanism

Editor, Gazette-Journal:
The recent elections in New York, New Jersey and Virginia should impress upon us the growth of unAmerican thinking in the voting public. Those that voted for Islamists or Socialists are of a mindset that defy the founding principles of the United States. Our country was established on Judeo-Christian basics: the Ten Commandments and a belief that we were created not BY God, but in the image OF God. Sharia law that repulses Christianity and denigrates women to the point of non-existence is not our way.
The quote: “Our constitution was made only for a moral and religious people” is attributed to John Adams. He and other founders believed that the Constitution relied on the people’s virtue and morality to be successful. Without a virtuous citizenry to uphold its principles, Adams argued, the constitutional framework would be insufficient to prevent the government from being abused or the society from descending into chaos.
