Letter: Affordable internet an engine of economic growth

I am writing in reaction to the article regarding the board’s discussion of county-wide broadband internet service that appeared in the Thursday, July 9 issue of the Gloucester-Mathews Gazette-Journal and in subsequent letters to the editor.

I have in direct correspondence urged the board of supervisors to seriously consider all options and to have a positive attitude toward providing unlimited affordable broadband internet as an engine of economic growth and quality of life in Gloucester County. There are many examples of successful public/private partnerships in the Commonwealth that could serve as a model.

High-speed unlimited broadband internet is so ubiquitous in urban areas that it is taken for granted that it is available. Our guests and our five children are shocked by how isolated and backward Gloucester is in terms of internet connectivity. Remote parts of Montana and Vermont have better access.
