Letter: A remembrance

The first weekend in December has long marked the start of the holiday season in Gloucester. Our community Christmas tree and lighting ceremony once stood as a true symbol of unity, remembrance, and local pride. Sadly, it has drifted from that purpose, and this year’s event made that painfully clear.
The ceremony lasted barely 10 minutes. There was no anticipation, no real celebration, and—most troubling—no recognition of the loved ones in whose memory the tree is dedicated.
Last year, when names were read, my grandfather, Wrayfield Oliver, was mistakenly left off the list. The explanation—“I’m new”—was unacceptable. These names represent lives and legacies. Their remembrance deserves care. This year, no names were read at all. Oversight or not, it showed clear disrespect to the families this tradition exists to honor.Nearby counties hold meaningful lighting ceremonies that draw crowds and reflect genuine community spirit. Gloucester should, too.
