Editor, Gazette-Journal:
First, the Mathews County Board of Supervisors extends a thank you to all county citizens as we have collaborated together to do everything possible to create a safe space during this pandemic. Mathews County still has low numbers and we want to continue to do everything possible to keep the numbers low by wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. This is especially important as we are now in Phase II.
Second, as much as we often think of our small community as being in a “fish bowl,” we are not and the events and activities of the world impact our lives on a daily basis. Technology has given us the opportunity to see great events and horrific events. This is so as we saw the killing of George Floyd. The Mathews County Board of Supervisors mourns with the family of George Floyd. We are proud of the way our community rallied together in a peaceful demonstration against racism and police brutality.
Additionally, we extend a huge thank you to the Mathews County Sheriff’s Office under the leadership of Sheriff Mark Barrick. Leadership is key to success in any department/organization. Lives depend on his effective leadership. In addition, it is equally important that our Sheriff’s Department works in tandem with other departments and most importantly the community at large. It is a blessing and gratifying that we can say our Sheriff’s Department is managed and operates in such a manner.
The mission statement of the Mathews County Board of Supervisors is as follows:
“The government of Mathews County exists to provide the citizens of the county with services which will address their individual and collective needs both for the present and the future. In partnership with the citizens, the government of Mathews County pledges a civic stewardship that is fiscally accountable, socially responsible and worthy of citizen trust.”
We continue to promote transparency, effectiveness and partnership with each other and the citizens of this community. We are also dedicated to ensuring that we promote equality and equity in our community. We do not support any form of discriminatory actions against anyone on the basis of gender, age, disability, race, religion, sexuality or social class.
Finally, we thank all of you for your continued support, engagement and willingness to share your concerns and suggestions. Again, please continue to practice safety measures in the midst of COVID-19.
