I just wanted to write a letter to let the community know what a great local volunteer fire department we have here in Mathews. As many of you know, they are always raising money to support themselves with various BBQ dinners and such and with that money, they give back to the community.

I had the opportunity to witness this first hand last week when my daughter’s kindergarten class was allowed to have a field trip at Station 1. The firefighters that took time out of their busy work day to volunteer and guide these kids through the fire station were amazing and very welcoming! The kids loved the tour! Who wouldn’t, several big fire trucks up close to explore.

The kids went back to school and waiting for them to take home were goodie bags and when I say goodie bags, I mean GOODIE bags. The firefighters had given them nylon cinch bags with fire safety tips printed on it, a kid’s size T-shirt with the fire department logo, a glow-in-the-dark b...
