Letter: A glaring omission

I am writing in reference to last week’s article on the Mathews County Board of Supervisors’ work session on the 2017-2018 budget and its one glaring omission: that of praise for Nancy Welch and our schools.

I prefaced my school budget remarks by stating that the board of supervisors and school system are “allies not adversaries” and that we are partners in this endeavor. I stated that we are all stewards of the taxpayers’ money and have a duty to be as prudent as possible. I also commended Nancy for the fine job that both she and our schools are doing.

This part of the exchange was omitted and the article’s reference to categorical budgeting and the suggestion that its imposition would imply misuse of funds totally distorts the substance of the meeting or our relationship between our board and the school superintendent.
