Editor, Gazette-Journal: The Mathews Memorial Library is indeed a source of pride for our county, thanks to Bette Dillehay, the library’s director for nearly 24 years. Bette will retire on Dec. 31, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of innovative programs and services. Throughout her tenure, Bette’s dedication and creative vision provided the spark behind the major achievements of the library. These include the renovation and expansion of the library building, which provided spaces for services to children, teens and an adult area where patrons can use the library’s public wireless (Wi-Fi) networks. We also applaud Bette’s role during Covid when she authorized the purchase of hot spots for residents to use during the crisis to connect with doctors, friends and family. The success of all of these and other achievements was reflected in the award granted by the Institute of Museum and Library Services in 2005, naming our library the best rural library in the United States.
