Letter: A cover-up, perhaps?

Attorney General Jason Miyares’s office pledged to have a report written on the murder of three University of Virginia students and the wounding of two others in November of 2022. His office paid the law firm of Quinn, Emanuel, Urquart and Sullivan LLP over $1 million to write a report.That report is now being withheld from the public, despite a commitment to transparency.

Miyares’s office responded to my Oct. 24, 2023 FOIA request with the agreement, including the cost and salaries. Page two of the agreement states “a version of the report with appropriate exclusions will be prepared for the public.”

The document is not an investigation. It is a report. Those are two different documents. If the university was culpable, an investigation would have uncovered that. A report usually documents what happened.

There is only one conclusion. The document must contain damning information about the university and whatever role it played in making the killing...
