Letter: A constitutional issue

Katie Thompson (“The Loony Left?” March 7 Readers Write) advocates a position that many people in the United States oppose. That is the elimination of private ownership of the AR-15 and other similar rifles. She also advocates for positions that many people would accept; namely increased communication with the National Instant Check System (NICS). 

The exact nuances of how the increased communication should apply to all sales would need to be established. For example: Would licensed gun shops be allowed to conduct the check for a nominal fee or could the local police conduct the check? Would local jurisdictions provide a venue at a gun show to conduct the check for all transactions? Again, an acceptable proposal, but it does require some further clarification.
