Letter: A cleaner Gloucester … perhaps perpetually

Editor, Gazette-Journal:

For those of you that have not had an opportunity to serve your great county you live in, do try either this spring or fall and volunteer with the Gloucester Clean Community initiative. I have been able to participate in two events in past years and it’s great to get family, friends, and co-workers to help out in cleaning our county twice a year.

Let’s face the facts—there’s no question that our county is dirty and needs constant attention. We see it every day as we come and go. We can do our part individually and help keep Gloucester clean each day, but the fact is people do not care and are going to continue to litter and the litter impacts us all in more ways than we think. To help this, a full-time position should be created: General Groundskeeper. Some points for consideration are as follows:

—Must have a high school education.

—Enjoys working outdoors.

—Position would pay $16/hour, 40 hours a week. Work rain or shine. No overtime allowed.

—Two weeks’ vacation and typical county benefits package would be made available.

—Allowance of up to $250 a year for replacing boots that will be needed in the line of duty.

—$500,000 accidental death/dismemberment insurance policy with no disclaimers and caveats; policy payable to spouse or partner of the Groundskeeper.

The Groundskeeper would never run out of work …

NEVER. Some may ask, how can the county afford such a position? Charge each Gloucester County deed of trust holder a buck a year (based upon an estimated 35,000 recorded deeds of trust). I would gladly pay $1 a year on my tax bill to see a cleaner county.

Go Green and keep Gloucester clean … oh, and make sure you do your part too.
