Letter: A call to community service

Civic organizations in this country are running into a problem and organizations in Mathews are no exception.

The membership is aging but the requests for assistance from the public are increasing. It is imperative that more folks give of their time to these organizations before they cease to exist from lack of membership.

I am a member of my church and four additional organizations. True, I’m retired, but even when I was in the military full time and simultaneously worked a part-time job I made time to volunteer in my community. And I’m not special, for there are others who work and volunteer. But there are not enough.

One of the organizations to which I belong has only 18 members: one in their 30s, two in their 40s, two in their 50s, four in their 60s, four in their 70s, four in their 80s and one in his 90s.
