LEONA MARIE SELF

Leona Marie Self, 83, of Gloucester, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, 2018, at Heron Cove Rehabilitation Center following a long illness.

Leona was born May 18, 1934, the daughter of Aleck and Rena Ven Hoizenga in Morrison, Illinois.

Leona worked for many years at the Ranch House in York County. She later moved to Mechanicsville, Virginia, where she continued to care for others by running a nursing home in her house for several years. Leona later returned to Yorktown to be closer to her family and care for her great-grandchildren. 

She was a longtime member of Yorktown Baptist Church and made sure to stay connected even when she was not able to attend. Leona was a loving individual who touched the lives of many people and will truly be missed by all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughter, Rebecca Pickral and husband Robert; her son, William McFadden and wife Margie; grandchildren, Dawn Fansler, Susan Gregory, Glen Johnson and Phillip Boykin; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; sisters, Dolly Houisinga, Irene Charneski, Pauline Corkhill, and Lois Foster.

A memorial celebration will be held at 12 noon Saturday, Feb. 3, 2018, at Yorktown Baptist Church.

In her memory, the family desires contributions be given to Yorktown Baptist Church, 237 Nelson Street, Yorktown, Va. 23690.
