Legion Post 83 wins top chili honors again

The fourth Chili Cook-Off organized by the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad was a very successful event. Ron Lambert who spearheaded this project three years ago, is still, with a soft lance in hand, leading the cook-off. Participants sell out, or nearly so, every year.

Many stories tell the origin of chili (almost as many as different recipes tell how to make it). The only thing certain is that chili did not originate in Mexico. Many stories come from Texas, especially around San Antonio where ladies selling chili on street corners were called “Chili Queens.” Perhaps what is considered chili today is what Texans were making and enjoying years back, but with many modifications good or bad.

Today we read of Cincinnati style chili, Texas style chili, etc., but a new style of chili should certainly be added: Mathews County style chili. We hope it will make an annual appearance for years to come. At the Chili Cook-Off, you choose the chilis, as many as you like, and receive...
