Legion baseball wins district tournament, opens at state

The Gloucester Post 75 baseball team won its fourth straight American Legion District 3 Junior Tournament last week. The boys went 4-1 and came out of the losers’ bracket to earn a berth in the state tourney that began yesterday in Richmond.

Post 75 opened the district tournament with a 5-2 win at home over Williamsburg Post 39 Gold. Nick Brandt pitched a complete game for Gloucester, giving up five hits and one earned run with five strikeouts and no walks.

Ridge Motley drove in Tanner Payne in the first inning for a 1-0 Post 75 lead and the team scored three runs in the fourth to make it 4-0. Post 39 cut the lead to 4-2 in the fifth before Post 75 tacked on a run and held on for the win.

Post 39 Blue, the regular season champion, routed Post 75 in a 10-0 game in round two at Jamestown High School. The game was scoreless in the fourth until Post 39 scored six runs on four hits, two walks and an error. They added four runs in the sixth to make it 10-0.
