More than a year and a half after the Lee-Jackson Elementary School gym was closed because of a failing roof system, new trusses are finally being installed. Workers from First Class Contracting were at the Mathews County school on Tuesday, using a crane to lift each truss into place. The Richmond firm, a division of Athens Building Corporation, is doing the work for $236,000. School officials are hopeful that all the work will be completed by the start of the 2017-2018 school year on Sept. 5. Elementary school students had been using the Brooks Auditorium at adjoining Thomas Hunter Middle School for gym classes ever since the problem with the roof was detected in January 2016.
