Leather artist featured at Bay School

Warren Dorer is the August artist of the month at the Bay School Community Arts Center in Mathews.
A native of Long Island, New York, Dorer began developing his leatherworking skills in 1971 while he was still in the U.S. Navy. He was originally inspired to try his hand at leatherwork after being given a handmade leather belt by a friend. Shortly after receiving the belt, he found antique leather working tools in a dusty box tucked under a table in an Ocean View pawn shop. That was the beginning of his 54-year fascination with leather art.
Dorer’s goal has always been to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship when creating with leather. He enjoys stepping outside the traditional interpretation of leatherwork as he experiments with different forms, colors, finishes, and functions of his leather art.
