Leases approved for broadband towers

Broadband proposals brought before the Mathews County Board of Supervisors have generally received unanimous support from board members, but that didn’t happen during Monday night’s board meeting.

With broadband efforts moving full-steam ahead, as reported by Broadband Advisory Board Chair Judy Rowe and consultant Jeff Beekhoo, Interim County Administrator Sandy Wanner asked the board to approve his signing of leases that will enable the erection of two towers in the county that will ultimately result in full broadband coverage for all residents.

Supervisors Paul Hudgins and Jackie Ingram voted against signing the leases, they said, because the board hasn’t yet received copies of the plats showing the easements going to the towers.

The towers are to be located on land belonging to the Mathews Volunteer Fire Department at Station 2, Bohannon, on East River Road, and the Mathews Volunteer Rescue Squad at the squad building on Cricket Hill Road.
