Nicholas Lawrence of Gloucester, a student at the Savannah College of Art and Design, earned honors in the Society of Professional Journalists’ 2012 Region 3 Mark of Excellence Awards.
Lawrence won first place in the Radio In-Depth Reporting category and placed third in the TV In-Depth Reporting category with SCAD classmates Shannon Craig, Kenneth Rosen and Douglas Scarpa.
The Mark of Excellence Awards program honors the best student journalism in the southern U.S. from colleges in Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. SCAD students and alumni placed first, second or third in 16 or 39 categories covering photography, Web, broadcast and print journalism.
First-place winners will go on to compete nationally against winners from 11 other regions. The SPJ will announce the national winners May 2. They will be recognized at the Excellence in Journalism 2013 conference in August in Anaheim, Calif.
