Laura Smith, known for her good cooking, especially desserts, is often asked, and if not, she volunteers, to bring the dessert. Laura learned how to cook from her mother and grandmother by helping and watching. She recalls in her younger days one time that she and her friend ate most of the batter when making a cake. Her good cooking is not her only ability. She has more hidden talents than one would imagine. Raised on the Mathews County farm of her grandfather, Frank Moughon, Laura says she knows how to work farming machinery and also how to work on and repair even a farm tractor. She has also helped to fish gill nets and crab pots. When her parents were building their home, Laura was right there hammering and nailing. “They call me, instead of Jack, Jill of all trades.” Laura has retired from Canon after 31 years of service and her husband Wayne has also retired; they now have time to expand their many fun activities.
